I’m Susan. I live in NY, the dirtiest, stinkiest, rat-iest, MOST AMAZING-EST city in the world.
(Not all of NY is Times Square!)
I write #ownvoices YA (contemporary, contemporary fantasy), always sprinkled with a little bit of romance, and some out-there humor. #LOLingatmyownjokes
(I never take a picture without the peace sign. I don’t know what it is. I’ve tried to stop. I don’t even get satisfaction from it. I just do it. It’s my blessing, it’s my curse.)
I also overuse hashtags. If you’re looking for gifs, I may end up disappointing you. But since I’m adaptable, I’ll make the gif-effort a la every single #PitchWars post I’ve ever seen.
(I’ll get better at it, I promise.)
Between 2012 and 2016, I read over 1000 books. And in not ONE of those books, did I see ME. For awhile, I wasn’t even looking. And then I rationalized it – I don’t want to see myself in books! I’m living me…that’s not aspirational. Eventually, though…I started to feel really f*cking sad about it.
So I set out to change something. I started to write a story. And when I opened my eyes and looked around, when I started paying attention, I saw other people were doing something too. A whole freaking MOVEMENT of people writing their identities in books.
Writing this, my first YA novel, has been both the most liberating and the most debilitating experience ever. And I’ve loved every minute. I even wake up every morning to write with the #5amwritersclub on Twitter. I don’t wake up at 5am for anything. It’s why I’m a sloth and always wear my hair up in a messy bun. But for writing this story, I’m doing it.
I first heard about and jumped into the #PitchWars phenomenon at RT this year where I attended the Roadshow Workshop (<-should that be capitalized?), was SUPER IMPRESSED with the supportive community, and walked away with a pretty kick-ass query – thanks to the Ravenclaw eye of the amazing Tomi Adeyemi (I also walked away with a HUGE best-friend-crush on Tomi. Honest to goodness, she is a treasure.)
And here I am…terrified of rejection, but going for it anyway. Because…why not, right? #Iwillnotselfreject.
THINGS I LOVE:
- God help me, I love me some bourbon.
- God help me more, I can’t stop watching Real Housewives of any county.
- Food Network and HGTV are my background jams.
- Adam Silvera is my book boyfriend.
- I am one of the few people in the world who loves their day-job. I work in HR for a pretty awesome company. I got the job when I told them in my interview that I hate people and love romance novels. This is not a joke.
(Erika Jayne 4eva!)
THINGS I DON’T LOVE, NOT EVEN ONE BIT:
- Donald Trump. (This is not me being political. It’s me being real.)
- Orange flavored candy. And orange hair. See above.
And that is me. (PICK ME! PICK ME!)
